Poetry  : 21 February 🔼

Poet  :  Jotsna Jari

 .

The twenty first day of February comes

 A day of tears

 When this day arrives

I feel indebted to the martyred brothers.

 .

 Mother’s speech is mother tongue…

 always dearer than life

 Take that language

in the corner of the chest.

 .

 There is no difference between

 mother and motherland

 So Salam Rafiq Barkat others

 swear by.

 .

Not only for the Bengali language

the victory of the mother tongue too

  There is nothing dearer

than this mother language…  nothing else.

In Bangladesh, 21 February is the anniversary of the day when the people of Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) fought for recognition for the Bangla language. It is also celebrated in West Bengal, India.

On 21 February 1952, police opened fire on rallies. Abdus SalamAbul BarkatRafiq Uddin AhmedAbdul Jabbar and Shafiur Rahman died, with hundreds of others injured. This was a rare incident in history, where people sacrificed their lives for their mother tongue.

21 February is observed as Shaheed Dibosh every year throughout Bangladesh  in remembrance of the martyrs of language movement of 1952. The commemoration begins at the early hours of the day with mourning songs that recall the supreme sacrifices of the language martyrs.

The idea to celebrate International Mother Language Day was the initiative of Bangladesh. It was approved at the 1999 UNESCO General Conference and has been observed throughout the world since 2000. UNESCO believes in the importance of cultural and linguistic diversity for sustainable societies. ]
